Gianfranco Ferre

Known as the ‘architect of fashion’, Italian fashion designer Gianfranco Ferré was one of the very first pioneers to combine architecture and fashion styling. He graduated from the School of Architecture at the Milan Polytechnic Institute many years before his first foray into the fashion world.

After creating jewellery and accessories for his friends, a Milan boutique owner spotted his creations. Recommending these designs to her friends, one thing led to another and prominent Italian fashion editors, including Anna Piaggi, spied the creations which lead to coverage in Italy’s high profile magazines.

Much of his work was heavily inspired by several trips to India in the 1970s, and after freelancing for many prominent names in the fashion industry he finally went on to design his very own fashion collection. In 1978 he presented his debut signature women’s ready-to-wear collection with a show at the Principe di Savoia Hotel in Milan. In May of 1989, Gianfranco Ferré was appointed Artistic Director of Christian Dior for the women’s Haute Couture, Prêt à Porter and Fourrure (Fur) lines.

In 2002, the Gianfranco Ferré Company was acquired by Tonino Perna’s IT Holding Group. Gianfranco Ferré became Artistic Director of the house. He went on to have a very successful career in the fashion industry until after suffering a brain haemorrhage, Gianfranco Ferré died in Milan on June 17, 2007.

The Gianfranco Ferré Home Collection, under the creative direction of Livio Ballabio, have created a sophisticated style inspired by the essence of 19th century England. Across luxurious bed linen, porcelain de Limoges tableware, and exquisite Italian crystal glassware, the distinguished and classic influences from menswear fabrics can be elegantly seen.
